Scotland announces a 12-man rugby sevens team for Delhi 2010

Scotland has announced a 12-man rugby sevens team for the IX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi to be held in the capital from 3-14 October.

The Times of India has reported that the squad, nominated by Scottish Rugby team last month, will be travelling to Delhi as part of the 200-member team representing Scotland at Delhi 2010. The rugby squad also has four reserves.The squad has seven players who played in the Edinburgh leg of the 2010 IRB Sevens World Series at the end of May, finishing fifth, and an additional two players who played in the team which achieved back-to-back semifinal places in London and Edinburgh in the 2009 tournament. 

All the players have previously played in successful Scotland sevens teams including one who played in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) is confident the team will manage a top-eight finish at Commonwealth Games. In Delhi, a total of 16 teams will compete in rugby sevens including reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallists New Zealand, Rugby World Cup champions Wales and IRB Sevens World Series champions Samoa.

Scotland are seeded eighth in the Games and will play in pool A, against top seeds New Zealand, Canada and Guyana. 

"We are delighted that our participation in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi has been confirmed today," Scotland head Coach Stephen Gemmell said.“The Commonwealth Games is a major event on the world sporting calendar and Scottish Rugby and Scotland sevens are hugely honoured to be part of it." The Rugby sevens competition will take place on October 11 and 12 at Delhi University Grounds.
